If you are booked for a first trimester ultrasound (11 to 13 week and 6 days), then a blood requisition form will be emailed to you. Please have the test done a few days before your appointment so that the result is available for your appointment. Please read first trimester screening to understand why the tests is performed. This test does need to be done if you have had the NIPT.

E

If you have had the NIPT, please provide us with a copy of your results.

E

If you have had your 12 week scan/first trimester screening or have any other previous ultrasound reports, please provide us with these results reports.

Appointment preparation

Preparing for your appointment.

E
It is advisable to not have an empty bladder for the first trimester scan. This does not imply that you have to drink large amounts of fluid either.
E

It is recommended that you eat or drink something prior to your appointment. Babies are more active after meals and this will assist in the assessment of the baby during the scan.

E
Belly-button rings could potentially damage ultrasound probes. You will be asked to remove these prior to the ultrasound.
E

Stretchmark prevention oils and creams affect the quality of the scan. Try to skip applying this on your tummy prior to the scan.

E
Both first and second trimester scans are performed trans-abdominally but sometimes an internal (transvaginal) scan may be required depending on the baby’s position or to assess your cervix.
E
The consultation is about an hour long so plan your day accordingly. It will be longer if you are pregnant with twins or triplets. There is always a possibility of a longer consultation if the baby is not in an ideal position for me to assess the anatomy.
